A grateful patient speaks out
A gift to NRGH is a gift to myself. The hospital is there for me, my family, my friends, and for the community. Therefore, making regular donations is the natural thing to do. It is a relationship: We cannot keep on receiving and not giving back. Faithfulness in giving is so important. Donations small or large, made on a regular basis, are the lifeline of the hospital. And there is a joy in giving! What a wonderful way to thank our doctors, nurses and the NRGH team for their dedication and for the services they provide.

Code Brew Staff Appreciation
Hi Lynda: As discussed, I just want to share that you and all of your staff members are just too good. You all have wonderful customer service skills and are always welcoming with a big smile. I like the fact that your staff knows most of their (regular) customers and are ready with the coffee of their choice even before they ask for it. You all are a great source of energy and motivation to us, the customers. Please relay this message to your staff, and keep it up!!

NRGH Maternity Treatment Fantastic
To the Editor,
Sometimes thank you doesn’t seem enough. I recently spent six weeks on the second floor maternity awaiting our blessing.
I was admitted in the middle of the night on Nov. 13 and spent Christmas and my birthday there complete with being over 40, diabetes, placenta previa and complications during surgery.
Dr. Mathews and his colleagues were on call for the full 6.5 weeks before our daughter was born and always assured me that they were ready to deliver at any time.
I was determined to make it to the 37 weeks and was able to accomplish that with the kindness shown by the nurses on the maternity floor. It was not a good time, but we made the best of it.
I feel truly blessed having every nurse on the floor touch me in [his or her] own special way. I will never forget their compassion and love!
Beautiful, healthy Rebecca Elizabeth was born by C-section on Dec. 29 thanks to Dr. Mathews and his colleagues.
We would like to thank the nurses, doctors, cleaning staff, dieticians, ambulance drivers, lab technicians and blood donors for this truly wonderful blessing brought into our lives. Rebecca and I are doing wonderful and we are grateful!

Family Grateful for Efforts of NRGH Staff
To the Editor:
Our mother died Nov. 24 after being taken off life support at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She had choked the day before and fell into a coma after her heart stopped. Choking is a large risk for those who suffer from Huntington’s disease. She was 62.
We write this letter with the utmost thanks, amazement and respect for the efforts and support of the various medical people who came to our aid during this crisis.
First, to the heroic efforts of the two crews of paramedics and fire department personnel who responded to the scene Thursday at Valley Oak Drive in Nanaimo. Mom had stopped breathing despite the Heimlich and CPR and the paramedics brought back a pulse.
Next, to the team at the NRGH emergency ward who explained everything that was going on while they stabilized her.
Finally, to critical care nurses Donna, Hilda, Lori and Dr. Ronald, who were all so empathetic and forthright in their explanations of what was happening, and of helping us quickly understand the inevitable. They provided the ultimate comfort in the middle of the night Friday: tea and cheese, warm blankets, corners to sleep in and hugs of support while our mother passed on.
We live in a cynical time regarding our health care system. But when it was needed most, genuine caring and support from those within the medical system was there. This will forever be remembered by this family, and we are grateful.

Bouquets to NRGH
March 2007: A belated and much deserved thank you to Dr. Houghton, the NRGH Palliative Care staff – especially Carol – Hospice volunteer, Alice and RN Kelly, just to name a few, for taking such wonderful care of my husband during his last days and for helping me through this terrible time. You all made things a bit more bearable.
May 2007: A huge bouquet to Dr. Alan Hunt and nurses Sandie and Alex who helped bring our perfect little girl into this world. And thank you to the nurses in the nursery and recovery area, too.
